Colombian Town Votes NO on Dirty Mine

Congratulations to the residents of Cajamarca, Colombia! After years of protest against a proposed gold mine to be constructed in their town, the residents of Cajamarca recently voted in a referendum to decide if ‘La Colosa’, the proposed mine operated by AngloGold, would be built or not. 98% of residents voted against the construction citing environmental concerns. “The overwhelming victory of the ‘No’ campaign… sets a powerful precedent in favour of local democracy and environmental participation in Colombia,” said Carlos Lozano, a lawyer with Coalition member AIDA – the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense.
