Central American Bank pulls out of Honduran dam

Apr 5, 2016

In a victory for indigenous and human rights activists, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) announced Friday the suspension of its financing of the Agua Zarca Dam. The Honduras dam project has been a focal point for international attention following the killing of human rights defender Berta Caceres last month, a leading opponent of the dam.

With this decision, BCIE joins the Dutch Bank for Enterprise Development FMO, and the Finnish financier, Finnfund, which have also suspended investments in Honduras following the death of Caceres and a string of other human rights and environmental activists.

BCIE will conduct a visit to Honduras to assess whether or not to continue financing the dam project.
