A report by the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of assembly and association discusses the importance of freedom of speech within natural resource extraction projects. Concludes the following: rights of freedom of peaceful assembly and association are essential to fair work on extraction of natural resources, States bear primary responsibilities for ensuring this right, corporations need binding norms to ensure human rights in natural resource extraction projects, and civil society involvement is essential to these projects. “An environment that allows for the robust exercise of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association is essential in ensuring that natural resource exploitation is fair, transparent and accountable and benefits citizens.” Read more.
