Centre for Community Mobilization and Support NGO (CCMS)

CCMS Logo RGB PNGThe Centre for Community Mobilization and Support (CCMS) is a grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2009 in the Lori region, in Armenia. The organization was founded by activists from ten different villages, in order to promote democratic principles of civic participation in decision-making processes and infrastructure development.

CCMS is active on issues such as environmental protection, public health, human rights, youth empowerment and socio-economic development. The Centre’s activities include formal and informal educational initiatives, civic engagement, and support of civic projects. Through their work and their collaboration with other national and international NGOs, CCMS not only addresses pressing environmental and civic issues, but also lays a foundation for a more active and resilient civil society in Armenia.

The organization also established the “Citizen’s Voice” media platform to highlight and publicize cases of human rights violations, including environmental abuses, across Armenia. Additionally, it founded the “Eco-Activism Academy”, where activists from various regions of Armenia receive training on effectively
defending environmental and human rights. The organization’s work spans both local and national levels, including advocacy within the legislative arena.

Mission

Democracy with Civic Demand: to promote democratic principles of civic participation in decision-making processes and infrastructure development.

Our work in development finance

CCMS has extensive experience in opposing the establishment of new mines and tailing facilities. Over the past six years, it has consolidated and led more than 20 initiatives aimed at halting such developments, which often have funding from international development banks. Since its founding, the Centre for Community Mobilization and Support NGO has been dedicated to human rights protection, with a strong focus on safeguarding the social and ecological rights of communities, particularly in rural areas. One of its primary activities is defending the rights of citizens impacted by chemical pollution from the mining industry, both locally and nationally. To assess the environmental and health impacts of chemical pollution, the organization conducts organic and biological tests and environmental monitoring in partnership with European collaborators. Based on these findings, it has assisted over 70 Armenian citizens in filing court claims for health-related damages, as well as economic and environmental compensation, creating a legal precedent in Armenia.
