UN Expert: “Ensure the safety and protection of Gustavo Castro Soto”

Mar 11, 2016

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Michel Forst, called upon the Government of Honduras today to “ensure the safety and protection of Gustavo Castro Soto”, a Mexican human rights defender, and to facilitate his return to Mexico as soon as possible. Castro, who was wounded during the recent killing of Honduran indigenous leader Berta Cáceres, is currently being detained in Honduras under a “migratory alert” that prevents his return to Mexico. The UN Special Rapporteur also called for an “immediate, independent and impartial investigation” to be undertaken in the wake of Cáceres’s death. Read the statement here.
