Partnering with Communities to Defend Human Rights
In 2016 the Coalition engaged in partnerships with communities around the world to connect community struggles with strategic resources and campaign support and to bring community expertise to inform our strategies and policy work. Here we highlight the work of community partnerships in Malawi and Bangladesh.
Strengthening World Bank Safeguards
Coalition members around the world engaged in consultations, developed analyses and case studies, and conducted advocacy with government officials and World Bank staff and directors to prevent the dismantling of the World Bank’s social and environmental safeguards.
The New Development Bank’s First Year
The Coalition’s BRICS Working Group worked throughout the year monitoring the NDB´s evolution and engaging in advocacy with BRICS governments and bank officials. Working group members pressed the Bank to establish sustainability criteria, to institute processes for meaningful engagement with affected communities and civil society, and to develop a robust social and environmental policy framework.
Safeguarding Human Rights Defenders
In 2016, to address increasing attacks on those speaking out against harmful development activities, the Coalition launched a global campaign to press development financiers to respect human rights, promote an enabling environment for participatory development, and safeguard environmental and human rights defenders.
