Uzbek Forum for Human Rights

Uzbek Forum for Human RightsUzbek Forum for Human Rights is a Berlin-based NGO dedicated to protecting human rights and strengthening civil society in Uzbekistan. Uzbek Forum has special expertise on labor rights and regularly conducts monitoring of the impact of investments by multilateral development banks, particularly in the agriculture sector.

Since 2009, Uzbek Forum has worked with a network of local human rights activists in Uzbekistan, often working undercover for fear of reprisals by the Uzbek authorities, to expose human rights violations. Uzbek Forum’s network has conducted extensive monitoring of forced and child labor in Uzbekistan’s cotton, silk, and public sectors and has compiled the most comprehensive archive of labor rights violations in Uzbekistan.

Uzbek Forum works with a network of local monitors inside the country who have intimate knowledge of their communities and the social and political landscape of Uzbekistan.

Uzbek Forum has published dozens of reports, articles, videos, and podcasts that have informed policymakers, including Uzbek government officials, investors such as the World Bank, international human rights bodies including the UN, and perhaps most importantly, Uzbek civil society itself.

Mission

Uzbek Forum for Human Rights works to protect human rights and strengthen civil society in Uzbekistan.

Our work in development finance

Since 2020, Uzbek Forum has been monitoring rights violations at Indorama Agro cotton project, financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). In August 2023, Uzbek Forum - assisted by CEE Bankwatch Network - filed a request for compliance review with EBRD accountability mechanism (IPAM), which has now initiated an investigation.

In 2015, Uzbek Form (then Uzbek-German Forum/UGF) filed a complaint with IFC accountability mechanism (CAO) against Indorama Kokand for the use of child and forced labor in its cotton supply chain. The complaint resulted in a 10-year dispute resolution which has now been concluded.

Uzbek Forum has also engaged extensively with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) relating to its investments in Indorama Agro and housing development projects.
