On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz delivered a statement on the state of the world’s indigenous rights movement. She stated that “increasing foreign investments coming into many countries further exacerbate the loss of lands and resources of indigenous peoples and serious environmental destruction of their territories.” The Special Rapporteur called on states and multilateral bodies to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Outcome Document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in their development activities. Tauli-Corpuz highlighted that a human rights-based approach to development where indigenous peoples are seen as partners is the key to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
