World Bank must prioritize civic space and participation in its Evolution Roadmap

Around 65 national, regional and global civil society organizations from 35 countries have submitted a joint statement calling on the World Bank Group (WBG) to prioritize civic space and participation in its Evolution Roadmap, a process set to evolve the bank’s vision and mission, operating model, and financial capacity.

WBG

For the WBG to realize its proposed vision for the twin goals to be achieved through “sustainable, resilient and inclusive development,” the Evolution process must:

  1. Acknowledge the importance of civic space and participation for inclusive development;
  2. Recognize that a just transition requires the participation and protection of defenders;
  3. Advance transparent, accountable and participatory development that is supported by a rights-based framework;
  4. Ensure that “evolving” the WBG operating model and financial capacity provides dedicated, robust resources for participation.
