Inisiasi Masyarakat Adat (IMA) is a local group in Riau, Indonesia that is monitoring the impacts of massive plantations, development projects, extractive industries and forest concessions on local communities and Indigenous Peoples. It was established to resist the increasing erosion of the environment and natural resources of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and to protect their rights. IMA has been working to promote indigenous peoples as the guardians of nature since 2017 and received legal registration in 2023. They conduct research, advocacy and capacity building programs to empower the youth, women, persons with disabilities, and elderly people. For example, IMA has been active in monitoring and doing advocacy around the Teluk Sepang coal-fired power plant project financed by the China Exim Bank and the Rempang Eco-city Project supported by the Xinyi Group.
