Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP)

NRWP logoThe Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP) is a Liberian not-for-profit umbrella organization comprising community-based organizations, women human rights defenders, women dependent on land and natural resources, indigenous women, women working in large-scale concession and industrial areas, and women engaged in self-employing pro-poor entrepreneurial activities in both rural and urban slum and squatter communities.

NRWP works to support women’s rights to access and control land, water and food, through:

  • knowledge building: researching and documenting complainants and grievances of women on the issue of land, natural resources, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and other challenges they face that impends their use, control and management of resources they depend on for livelihood.
  • capacity building: empowering women with the requred knowledge to protect, defend and claim deprived rights.
  • movement building: strengthening existing structures of natural resource-dependent women in rural communities and aimed to decentralize across Liberia’s 15 counties.
  • seed funding: providing seed capital, value addition to food production and sustainability measures for land ownership (use, manage and control).
  • climate justice: empowering women/youth with knowledge, training on the climate crisis, impact on ecosystem and biodiversity, adaptation and mitigation measures through documentation of indigenous ecological knowledge to create models for climate solutions.

Mission

The mission of the Natural Resource Women Platform is to amplify the voices of under-represented women who are dependent on land and natural resources and women human rights defenders. The platform design strategies to engage relevant stakeholders in addressing concerns about these women and their rights to land and natural resources.

Notre travail dans le domaine du financement du développement

The Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP) has implemented multiple initiatives to advance community-led development and strengthen women’s rights, livelihoods, and leadership in land and natural resource governance in Liberia. Key achievements include establishing six community-based groups to advance women’s land and natural resource rights; improving livelihoods through cassava processing mills benefiting over 500 women and youth; and providing seed capital to 112 women for small businesses and backyard gardening. NRWP has raised awareness of the Liberian Land Rights Law of 2018 across seven counties, increasing community understanding of land and resource rights.

The platform has also conducted and supported research on the impacts of large-scale land concessions, non-timber forest product activities, and sexual and gender-based violence, resulting in reports, documentaries, media articles, and formal complaints to accountability mechanisms.
