In the past four years, YGC has been working in particular to support oil-affected communities, advocating for an end to fossil fuels and promoting a just energy transition. YGC uses different strategies to advance its work, including advocacy efforts, legal support, research, community mobilizing, social media campaigns, protest actions and other awareness-raising activities. YGC has supported communities in accessing information, understand the impacts of oil activities, and filing legal cases in their behalf. For example, they have supported communities affected by the Tilenga oil field and young human rights defenders who are facing reprisals for taking part in the Stop EACOP campaign and protesting against the EACOP pipeline.
YGC has also connected university youth with communities facing environmental and human right issues, to develop a deep understanding of social injustices happening in their communities and to increase their knowledge about solutions that can drive change in their communities. The youth are now using social media and other communication channels to amplify and escalate the issues our communities face, to increase pressure and seek for redress.
