Al-Haq calls on World Bank to strengthen protection in conflict-affected areas

Jun 21, 2016

On June 16th, the Palestinian human rights organization, Al-Haq, urged the World Bank to explicitly address the need for human rights safeguards for investments in conflict-affected areas during the Bank’s ongoing safeguard policy reform process. The Bank has announced plans to increase investments in fragile and conflict-affected States. Al-Haq is calling on the World Bank to include language in its new policies that would ensure that Bank investments do not cause or contribute to human rights violations, that social and environmental impact studies examine human rights risks, and that the Bank assesses the enabling environment for public participation and meaningful consultation around development projects in conflict-affected areas.
