Misplaced trust: new report out

Public development banks are putting human rights defenders at serious risk by relying on their clients to address reprisals.

They keep ignoring a key fact: in most cases of reprisals in the context of development projects, banks’ clients play a direct role in the perpetration of attacks.

Senegalese groups challenge banks on coal power plant

Coalition member Lumiere Synergie pour le Developpement (LSD) and Takkom Jerry Plyvalence Culturelle et Environmentale filed a complaint today to the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Dutch public investment Fund (FMO) and the West African Development Bank (BOAD)’s complaint mechanisms for non-compliance of the construction of the coal power plant of 125 MW in Sendou, Senegal with their environmental and social safeguards policies. Banco Europeo de Inversiones retira apoyo de $40 millones a Honduras

First BRICS bank loans spark debate over environmental protection

NDB project funding has been the subject of intrigue and concern among civil society organizations (CSOs) since the bank’s formal launch in Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2014. Yet news of these first ‘green’ loans has done little to ease their fears. The problem, CSOs say, is that since the NDB still lacks a proper social and environmental policy framework, it cannot safeguard against the adverse impacts of its projects – no matter how green they claim to be. AIIB to co-fund transportation projects with other development banks

The Chinese-lead Asian Infrastructure and Development Bank's first projects will be a highway in Pakistan, a road project in Tajikistan, and a ring road in Almaty, Kazakhstan, according to people with knowledge of the projects and tender documents.
