The New York Times editorial board today called on the World Bank to « champion human rights » through its new safeguards policy framework presently under consideration by the Bank’s board of directors. The Times cited that despite the fact that the institution’s own research acknowledges the importance of human rights for development effectiveness, the World Bank « has been far too reluctant to make adherence to human rights a core principle by which it evaluates projects intended to reduce poverty and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. » The Bank’s board of directors, made up of finance ministers from its member countries, will vote over the next month on whether to approve the draft policies.
