Steering Committee composition
The SC consists of 10 member organizations, who serve for a three year term.
To ensure diversity, we have an election system that ensures at least 5 members identify as women and at least 2 individual representatives self-identify as belonging to Indigenous or traditional communities. Additionally, one member will be appointed by a global caucus of Indigenous Peoples organizations within the Coalition through its own process.
Geographic distribution:
- Africa and Middle East (2);
- Asia (2);
- Europe and South Caucasus (2)
- Americas (3)
Please note that the geographic distribution refers to where the organization’s headquarters is located, not the individual representative. If the organization is registered in a different region because of security concerns, geographic representation can be based on operational focus and identity.
Who can stand for elections?
- Only members of the Coalition can stand for elections.
- Each member organisation may nominate one representative for election.
- Former members of the SC can re-stand for elections, but for max two consecutive terms.
Who can vote and how does the voting system work?
- Only members of the Coalition can vote and each member organisation is entitled to one vote in the election.
- The voting will be cast through an ad-hoc online voting platform. Only one contact for each member organization will receive the link to vote.
- To ensure each region can feel better represented while maintaining global accountability, votes will be weighed as follows:
- votes cast by members from the same region will count as one vote
- votes cast by members from outside the region will count as one third of a vote.
(e.g. a vote from a member from the Americas will count as 1 full vote for the candidates from the Americas, but ⅓ for the candidates from Africa and Asia).
- In the event of a tie vote, the candidate with the highest number of votes from their own region will be prioritized. In case the regional votes are the same, then a simple majority of outgoing SC members (excluding those SC members with a direct conflict of interest) will decide who to appoint based on diversity, level of participation in Coalition’s activities and other criteria.
- The Elections process is supervised by an Election Committee, composed of three members who are not running for elections (including outgoing SC members and other members), and supported by the Secretariat. The SC is responsible for appointing the three members of the Election Committee, by consensus.
- When voting, members are encouraged to prioritize:
- Candidates who can best represent the values and actions reflected in the Coalition’s Manifesto
- Candidates who come from social movements, grassroots/local groups, Indigenous Peoples and women-led organizations.
- Some members of the outgoing Steering Committee to enable continuity.
