Latin America is already green: "Green" Hydrogen
Community of Action

In the face of the threat posed by hydrogen projects in Latin America – promoted under the banner of the ‘energy transition’ – it is essential to strengthen coordination between organisations and communities across the region. Through the Community Resource Exchange of the Coalition for Human Rights in Development, the Hydrogen Community of Action Group known as “Latin America is already green” was formed – a regional network of organisations and communities working to highlight and tackle the impacts of so-called “green” hydrogen projects. Together, they are resisting more than 40 hydrogen projects in Chile, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay.

The group comprises the following organisations from the region:

  1. Agua es Vida Tacuarembó (Uruguay)
  2. Cohesión Comunitaria e Innovación Social A.C.– CCIS (Mexico)
  3. Feministas de la Patagonia Rebelde (Chile)
  4. Fundación ACUE (Chile)
  5. Fundación CAUCE (Argentina)
  6. Fundación Tanti (Chile)
  7. GeoComunes (Mexico)
  8. Paysandú Soberano (Uruguay)
  9. Sustentarse (Chile)

The group was formed with the aim of sharing knowledge and experiences amongst territories affected by the hydrogen industry, identifying common trends and stakeholders, building narratives that counter harmful extractivist narratives, and jointly defining strategies that can be used in advocacy work.

A just transition must prioritise community access to water, protect river basins and respect the ecological limits of territories, putting people and the planet first over the profits of the private sector, which implements its extractive projects without prior consultation and without benefits for the communities that inhabit and depend on the affected territories.

The communities and organisations that make up the group advocate for a world where people have sovereign decision-making power over their territories. They demand that the right to prior, informed and timely consultation be a minimum and non-negotiable requirement before any project in a territory is considered. Decisions affecting communities must be made with them at the centre of the process.
